An Operating System is a program that acts as an intermediary between the user of a computer and the computer hardware. It provides an environment in which a user can run programs. The objective of the operating system is to make the computer convenient to use and to employ the hardware in an efficient manner.
The Unix operating system has been around for a decades. Microsoft Windows became popular in the 1990s for the PC. Linux is a PC version of Unix.
